We have been given the honor and obligation of stewardship of this planet. Within it, all of earthly life resides. There are precious and delicate, hard-won habitats; there are cycles of life and regeneration; roots are moving under our feet every minute; there is life everywhere.
This series is to remind us to protect that magic. The intention is to promote pause and appreciation for all that surrounds us and to value ourselves enough to take care of it. The incredible beauty and geometry of nature is astounding and breath-taking. In this busy and complicated life, we can find peace in looking and listening.
We can also experience great sadness and frustration at the abuse of our precious home, but each person taking a little responsibility can make a big difference.
The women in this series represent guardians of the elements and fierce protectors of our resources. My hope is that each viewer sees a little of themselves in these women and feels empowered and encouraged to carry on doing their part as a citizen of the planet.
My subject matter comes mainly from the strong women around me whom I admire. My female students often inspire works that present women who are very feminine in their attire, but who wield power over materials or elements.
This current series of four female figures is in progress and represents the four elements: Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. It is classic subject matter, but remains relevant in our time as we work together to control some elements and nurture others.
